Recently, BMW announced that BMW digital keys can now be shared across platforms, which means that Android phone users can also use BMW digital keys. Previously, keys could only be shared via Apple iMessage, a feature that initially debuted on the 2021 BMW 5 Series.
Through the system's update function, a BMW Digital Key can be shared simply by sending a link via email, text or chat service such as WhatsApp. The link can also be shared via Apple Air or Android near Share. BMW says recipients don't need a specific app or even a BMW ID to use the digital key. There's an added bonus for iPhone users, though: Once the link is received and activated on your iPhone, it can be added to your Apple Watch as well.
BMW says this feature is available on all new cars equipped with BMW Digital Key or BMW Digital Key Plus, while older vehicles can use it if they use Remote Software Upgrade to update their software to "22-11" or higher. this function.
Unfortunately, there's a small caveat: Samsung smartphones are not yet compatible, only iPhones and Google devices. It works on iPhones running iOS 16.1 or later, as well as Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro devices running Android 13 or newer. For devices that can use this feature, up to 5 users can use one digital key.
