CES 2023: Mercedes-Benz uses NVIDIA Omniverse to build next-generation factories

★ Posted on 12-31,2024

Recently, we learned from official channels that Mercedes-Benz announced that it will make further efforts in digitizing the production process, using the NVIDIA Omniverse platform to build the next generation factory, and will adopt a "digital first" approach. Production mode, designing and planning manufacturing and assembly facilities through state-of-the-art planning systems to build state-of-the-art factories.

With NVIDIA’s AI and Metaverse technology, Mercedes-Benz is able to create feedback loops to reduce waste, reduce energy consumption and continuously improve quality.

Mercedes-Benz has been working with NVIDIA to develop software-defined cars. Its upcoming models will be built based on the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin centralized computing platform, and their intelligent driving functions will be tested and verified based on Omniverse's NVIDIA DRIVE Sim simulation platform.

By introducing NVIDIA Omniverse, Mercedes-Benz has further integrated AI and Metaverse technologies into its own development process to create a smarter and more efficient digital factory.

The production and manufacturing of automobiles is a huge project that involves thousands of parts and requires many workers to work in an orderly manner and cooperate with each other. Any supply chain or production issues can lead to costly delays.

In addition, when automakers launch new models, they must reconfigure the layout of their production plants to accommodate the new car's design. The process could lead to widespread factory shutdowns, halting production of existing vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz plans to start applying a new dedicated platform for electric vehicles at its plant in Rastatt, Germany. The plant currently produces Mercedes-Benz's A-Class and B-Class sedans, as well as the GLA compact SUV and the all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQA.

Experts from NVIDIA and Mercedes-Benz Operations are building a "digital-first" planning process for the plant that will not impact the plant's current production of compact models. In addition, this blueprint will be applied and promoted across Mercedes-Benz’s global production network to increase vehicle manufacturing flexibility.

NVIDIA Omniverse is an open 3D development platform that enables companies and institutions across industries to build and run digital twins for industrial and scientific use cases. Built on Universal Scenario Description (USD), Omniverse allows enterprises and developers to build custom 3D workflows that break down data silos and interact in a converged simulation environment with a single source of trust (SSOT) view.

Through Omniverse, Mercedes-Benz planners can access digital twins of factories, on demandReview and optimize plants. Every change planners make can be quickly evaluated and verified in the virtual world and then implemented in the real world to ensure ergonomically optimized factory worker efficiency.

In addition, by connecting Omniverse to its internal MO360 data platform, Mercedes-Benz is able to synchronize factories around the world to streamline the operation of the global production network and enable OTA software updates to production equipment.

By basing production planning on NVIDIA Omniverse, Mercedes-Benz is creating a smart manufacturing system as leading as its smart cars.
